Ley Seca Goes Into Effect
Midnight Wednesday
If you not yet aware, Article 3
of Ley 7633 of 26 September
1996, that controls the sale of
liquor in the country, will kick
as of midnight Wednesday and be
in effect until after midnight
Friday, leaving the country
"dry" of all liquor, wine and
beer sales.
No establishment - restaurants,
hotels, supermarkets, bars,
cantinas, etc - are exempt from
the "Ley Seca" as it is known.
In effect, bars, discos, night
clubs (strip clubs), liquor
stores will be closed.
Meanwhile, restaurants, hotels,
casinos and supermarkets will
have their liquor cabinets
sealed by the local police and
are subject to fine and loss of
their liquor license if they
violate the law.
In San José, the Policía
Municipal de San José will begin
visits to all establishments
with a liquor license and apply
the closure, while in other
areas it will be up to the local
municipalities and the Fuerza
Pública to ensure the closure.
Authorities are recommending to
establishments to isolate the
liquor section, cabinets, etc.
as a voluntary measure, because
even though police may not be
around to place seals, they can
fine the establishment for
violation.
