Nicaraguan Public Safety
Threatened
Drug trafficking is one of the
worst threats to public safety
in Nicaragua, as the country is
increasingly used as transit
point for South American drugs
heading for the US, a police
source said.
Speaking before the Central
American Parliament (PARLACEN),
provisionally in session in
Managua, Deputy Chief of
National Police, Commissioner
Horacio Rocha, said that
confiscation of cocaine has been
increasing since 2004, to the
point that 902 kg were seized
last year.
Strong blows dealt at
international drug trafficking
rings led drug bosses to launch
death threats against Director
of National Police Aminta
Granera, he recalled.
These threats stem from her
declared frontal war against
organized crime and drug
trafficking, he added.
According to Rocha, there is
evidence that the cartel of
Sinaloa city, in Mexico, is
operating in the entire
Nicaragua's Pacific area.
