El Salvador-Guatemala Drug
Traffic Grows
Retail drugs circulate between
Guatemala and El Salvador,
because those substances are
brought in through what they
call bordering blind spots, the
National Civil Police Anti-Drug
Division reported on Monday.
Godofredo Miranda, head of that
department, explained that
agents of that force seized
repeatedly small quantities of
drugs in bordering areas that
are usually non-patrolled.
Only in the first three months
of 2007, according to the report
presented on Monday, the
authorities arrested 721 people
for trafficking marijuana,
cocaine, and crack. Drugs seized
in 2007 reached 2612 pounds,
exceeding the 1323 pounds of
2006.
Miranda said watchfulness in
coastal areas increased to
counteract that scourge, after
intercepting a boat crewed by
six Colombians, with over 2368
pounds of drugs.
Then, the detainees agreed that
the drug was devoted to the
Guatemalan market, he said.
