Vote of No Confidence for
Guatemala Govt Minister
Guatemalan Government Minister
Carlos Vielmann is facing a vote
of no confidence due to the
security crisis in the country,
as ruled out by the Congress of
the Republic after a series of
questioning.
The decision was approved by 87
of the 158 congressional
members, thus forcing President
Oscar Berger to consider the
minister´s dismissal.
Before interrogations began
three weeks ago, Vielmann had
presented his resignation to the
president, who said he would
take a decision after the
questioning.
Legislators criticized Vielmann
for serious security problems
nationwide, but the killing of
three Salvadorian deputies,
their driver, and four policemen
accused of that crime were the
trigger that sparked off the
minister´s interrogation.
Those multiple assassinations
revealed that corps at the
service of organized crime have
permeated top Guatemalan
security institutions.
If President Berger decides to
ratify Vielmann for the post,
Congress would have to obtain
105 votes for his direct
dismissal.
