Costa Rica: New Pineapple
Exporter
Tholen – Spain, France and the
Netherlands will receive the
first four containers of
pineapples from the Costa Rican
this week from Sociedad
Agroturística Río Celeste.
The quality control in the
destination countries will
decide if this young firm can
continue exporting to the
European Union. The firm
regularly export the MD2 type of
Gold pineapple to the US too.
In fact, last year (its first
year in the business) they
exported 130 containers to the
US, representing approximately
US$700,000.
This year, Río Celeste expects
to triple the current production
area of 80 hectares and the
number of 30 employees.
Norman Solís, marketing
representative of the company,
declared that Río Celeste is
completing the certification
process with the EurepGAP
standards.
The company wants to concentrate
on the EU market but doesn’t
want to forget the US, which is
important particularly with
exports to the state of
California.
