Guatemalan Teachers Protest Privatization
Some 50,000 Guatemalan teachers staged one of their biggest demonstrations in this capital on Wednesday, when they protested against the privatization of education and for better conditions in the sector.

The teachers, supported by students and parents, gathered at Constitution Square and marched in two columns to the Presidential House and Congress.

"Here is the voice of the people fighting not only for their needs and their rights, but for true educational reforms according to the peace agreements," Carlos Gomez, of the National Coordinator of Teachers Schools, told Prensa Latina.

"It is a march for dignity, against neoliberal reforms on education and to defend the people´s just causes, like a public school with access for all," added Gomez.

The demonstrators in front of Congress asked that State institution to support their demands, particularly a 15-percent wage rise and rejection of the Framework Law.

Delegations from all 22 Guatemalan departments took to the streets in the city´s historic heart chanting slogans and calling the government to heed their demands.
