Nicaragua Expects Border Dispute
Fair Verdict
Nicaragua expects a sentence in
keeping with its "fair
expectations" at The Hague
International Court of Justice
but will respect the Court´s
decision on the territorial
litigation with Honduras, an
official source asserted.
"We will comply with the
International Court´s sentence,
there is no doubt about it, but
I expect a clear sentence that
responded to the fair initiative
Nicaragua has presented,"
declared the foreign minister
Samuel Santos.
Samuel Santos made that
declaration to the press after
President Daniel Ortega
officially welcomes the new
Cuban ambassador Luis Hernandez.
Nicaragua argued that its
territorial borders stretch up
to parallel 17 while Tegucigalpa
maintains the Nicaraguan border
only stretches up to parallel
15.
The Nicaragua government decided
to submit its demand to The
Hague in 1999 after the Honduran
government ratified the
Lopez-Ramirez Sea Border Treaty
signed by Honduras and Colombia
in 1986.
According to the agreement,
nearly 80,77 square miles of
territorial waters have been
lost.
The Judges will have the verdict
ready for the last quarter of
the year.
Samuel told the local and
foreign press accredited in
Managua that he lamented the
existence of this type of
dispute between countries and
brother peoples.
After fighting in favor of
overcoming those problems in
good will, Santos considered
that it would have been better
to use the money invested by
Nicaragua and Honduras in The
Hague to solve the problems of
poverty and improve health and
education
