Canada Hosting Costa Rica in
Toronto Friendly
The Canadian men's soccer team
will play in Toronto for the
first time in almost seven
years.
Organizers confirmed Wednesday
that Canada will host Costa Rica
in a friendly at BMO Field on
Sept. 12.
Costa Rica is ranked 50th in the
world compared to 103rd for
Canada, which is 3-7-5 lifetime
versus the Ticos.
It will mark Canada's first
match in Toronto since a 0-0
draw with Mexico at Varsity
Stadium in a World Cup qualifier
on Nov. 15, 2000.
Varsity Stadium, which was built
in 1898, was demolished in 2002,
leaving Toronto without a
suitable venue to host
sanctioned international
matches.
BMO Field is a 20,000-seat
facility being built for MLS
expansion entry Toronto FC,
which debuts April 28, and for
use by the national soccer
teams.
