Chile President to Visit
Guatemala
Guatemalan vice president,
Eduardo Stein, noted the
importance of the forthcoming
visit of Chilean president,
Michelle Bachelet, to his
country.
"For us it is an honor and
stimulating to receive her here
not only for relations with
Chile but, also, for what she
symbolizes as a woman head of
state who was once persecuted
for her democratic ideals."
Stein said.
Stein explained that definite
announcements would be made
during her visit about enforcing
a Free Trade Treaty between the
two countries.
Bachelet will receive an
honorary doctorate from
Guatemala s San Carlos
University as an expression of
admiration and acknowledgement
of her person, not only as a
head of state but, also, as a
leader, Stein added.
The Chilean president is
expected on Sunday to attend the
Annual Assembly of Directors of
the Inter-American Development
Bank (IDB).
Alex Foxa, Chilean
representative in the IDB told
this press service that Bachelet
has placed emphasis on a series
of social programs including
pre-school expansion and another
called "Chile solidarity" aimed
at rural regions.
Another initiative deals with
the integration and support of
native communities such as the
Aymaras, Quechuas and Mapuches,
and she supports bilingual
education, community
participation and networks of
social assistance.
