Computer Malfunction Collapsed Liberia Airport For 90 Minutes
The longest ninety minutes was the sentiment of many tourists, who ending their Costa Rican vacation, had to wait as the computer system at the Daniel Oduber internatioanl airport in Liberia, Guanacaste, broke down. The computer malfunction was in the immigration service computers that affected both outgoing and incoming travellers.

The hot sun, the high temperatures and the little comfort the airport has to offer was the source of many unhappy travellers.

The computer failure occurred around noon time, when for no apparent reason the system collapsed and not restored for almost one and a half hours, which caused delays to the three incoming and four outgoing flights.

Sources say that the computer malfunction was due to the high temperatures and the lack of an air conditioner to cool down the computer equipment. The malfunction meant a loss of connection to the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería central computer in San José.

"The situation is not the responsibility fo the Aviación Civil ni del Ministerio de Transportes (Civil Aviation) as we have done all we can to offer space and better conditions to the passengers, however, the efforts have to be assumed by all those involved", said Analive Rosales, airport director.

Rosales added that immigration personnel have been experiencing problems with the computer system during the last couple of weeks, sometimes failing for up to 15 minutes.

"During today's crisis, I got a call from the immigration director, Mario Zamora, who committed to solving the problem during the coming week, negotiation with airlines for the purchase of an air conditioner and sending technical support to evaluate the situation", said Rosales.

Yesterday's situation tested the resources of the airport terminal as it did not have adequate space to hold all the passengers as well as no space for so many aircrafts at one time. In addition, the parking lot outside the terminal was not enough for all the buses, minivans, taxis and cars dropping off or picking up passengers.

And not to mention the problems that the delay caused airlines and passengers with connections at other airports.

All passengers coming in and going out of Costa Rica have to clear immigration.
