Nicaragua OK with Hague Verdict
President Daniel Ortega said
Nicaragua will accept the
verdict of the International
Court of Justice on a
territorial dispute with
Honduras.
"We will accept The Hague
verdict, whether it favors
Nicaragua, as we hope, or
Honduras", Ortega promised
Thursday night.
The conflict relates to the
Nicaraguan demand to extend
water space at the Caribbean Sea
to parallel 17, which Honduras
limits to parallel 15.
Nicaragua decided to sue at The
Hague in 1999 after the Honduran
Congress confirmed the 1986
Lopez-Ramirez Maritime
Demarcation Treaty with
Colombia.
Still, Ortega said Honduran
President Manuel Zelaya shares
his view. "We will not become
enemies for that, and it would
be best if borders did not
exist," added Ortega.
In line with the above Ortega
called Latin America and the
Caribbean to follow the European
Union example and eliminate
borders.
