Guatemalan Mayas to Exorcise
Bush
Hundreds of Guatemalan
indigenous people attended a
vigil and a Mayan ceremony in
Tecpan city to protest the visit
by US President George W. Bush
to sacred sites on Monday.
"This is an act of resistance,
in defense of our sovereignty
and mother land," indigenous and
rural leader Juan Tiney told
Prensa Latina.
The US president, who arrived in
Guatemala Sunday for a 23-hour
visit, is expected to visit
communities of Santa Cruz,
Balanya and Chirijuyu, as well
as the ceremonial center of
Iximche, in the department of
Chimaltenango.
According to spiritual leader
Damian Morales, a man who has
sent planes to kill hundreds of
people and does not respect
Guatemalan residents in his
country has no right to enter a
sacred site.
After the visit, Mayas are
expected to do a ritual
cleansing of the place to dispel
the war spirits of Mr. Bush and
return peace and harmony to that
place.
The US statesman will return to
the capital at noon and his
official welcome will take place
in the National Culture Palace
at 13:45 local time, followed by
a bilateral meeting with his
counterpart Oscar Berger and a
news conference.
Parallel to this, hundreds of
demonstrators, convened by the
General Workers Union, will
stage a rally in front of the
Government Palace to protest
Bush s visit here.
Meanwhile, Episcopal Conference
president Alvaro Ramazini termed
controversial the US president's
trip at a moment of increased
persecution, capture and
deportation of thousands of
Guatemalan residents in United
States gets worse.
