celebrated his 58th birthday
over the weekend at a party held
at the farm of former ICE

over the sounds and voices of
the mariachis that he will seek
re-election in 2010.
Calderón governed between 1990
and 1994 and is currently under
indictment for corruption for
his involvement in the
Caja-Fischel scandal, where he
is alleged to have received
monies for his influence in a
multi million dollar loan by the
government of Finland to the
Caja Costarricense de Seguro
Social, broker by the Fischel
pharmacy chain.
Calderón, according to the
Partido Unidad Socialcristiana (PUSC)
president, Luis Fishman, is the

and bring it back to power afer
a dimsal show in the 2006
elections under the leadership
of Ricardo Toledo.
Fishman said confirmed Sunday
that Calderón is their man, the
only man capable of uniting the
party and bring many party
members who abandoned the party
following the corruption
scandals that also included
former president Miguel Angel
Rodriguez, also of the PUSC
party.
During the celebrations,
Calderón said that he will be
vindicated as the Ministerio
Público does not have sufficient
evidence to procede with the
case, a case where he was
detained in 2004 and to date the
Fiscalía (prosecutor's office)
has yet to file formal charges.
Calderón was placed under house
arrest and for months spent time
in preventive detention in La
Reforma prison, sharing a cell
block with former president
Rodriguez. As the investigation
continued, Calderón was released
from preventive detention and
placed under house arrest which
was later changed to conditional
liberty.
More tha 1.200 attended the
party, paying ¢3.000 colones
each raising ¢3.600.000 colones
for the party.
