Chilean Government Not To Promote Use of Nuclear Energy
The Chilean government will not promote the use of nuclear energy in the country, said Chile's Mines and Energy Minister Karen Poniachik on Tuesday.

Chile will stick to the Chagual accord as promised by President Michelle Bachelet when she was a presidential candidate, and will not consider using nuclear power to generate energy, Poniachik said after meeting ecologists.

"This government has a serious program targeting three major goals: diversifying our energy supplies, seeking greater autonomy and promoting an efficient and sustainable use of energy," Poniachik said.

However, Poniachik added that this did not mean Chile would abandon an analysis which could be needed by a future government to decide if nuclear power is feasible, and under what conditions it may rightly opt for this technology.
