Nicaragua Central America HQ
Offer Stands
Nicaraguan president, Daniel
Ortega repeated his offer to
provide temporary headquarters
for the Central American
Parliament (PARLACEN) due to the
lack of security in Guatemala.
The situation in Nicaragua
offers peace for the sessions
without fears and anxieties that
today exist in Guatemala,
assured the Sandinista leader to
board members of the regional
parliament.
Ortega received the PARLACEN
members in the offices of the
Sandinista National Liberation
Front (FSLN) that, together with
the Olof Palme Convention Center
has been his office since he
became the President of
Nicaragua last January 10.
"We have a site with all
conditions for the Central
American Parliament, in a large
and spacious building," offered
the president referring to the
Presidential House.
The modern installation was
built during the 90s with funds
donated by Taiwan and is
currently unoccupied because
Ortega refused to install his
government there to save funds.
During the one hour meeting of
the delegation headed by
PARLACEN president, Ciro Cruz,
the visitors expressed
appreciation for the gesture of
the Nicaraguan president and
noted that he was the first to
make that offer.
The Sandinista leader made the
offer after three Salvadorian
deputies and their driver were
killed in Guatemala.
The change of headquarters,
however, must receive the
authorization of the presidents
of Guatemala, El Salvador,
Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and
the Dominican Republic that are
the member states of PARLACEN
founded in 1991.
