New Postal Address System Ready
Costa Rican addresses can leave
even the experienced scratching
their head. But, do not despair,
the Correos de Costa Rica (Costa
Rican Post Office) is coming to
the rescue, as it begins to use
a new system of postal addresses
during this month and next.
Currently, a postal address on a
letter or document can look
something like this - "Plaza
Mayor, del Fogoncito, 25 metros
oeste, 50 sur, casa mustaza con
amarillo con porton negro" (the
postal address of
Insidecostarica.com). If we were
to paint the outside of our
offices, we would then have an
entire new address. However, to
ensure that we get our mail
"always" we, like many in Costa
Rica, use a postal box.
Correos Costa Rica has devised a
new method of locating each
location with a street name and
number, to put an end to the
confusing addresses now in use.
The new system will begin
mapping out addresses for
businesses first and then move
to residential homes and is
limited only to addresses that
have door-to-door mail delivery.
As an example, Correos de Costa
Rica, would give a business
located in San Pedro 11501 as
part of the new postal address,
which is decoded as [1] for the
province of San José, [15] for
the canton de Montes de Oca and
[01] for the district of San
Pedro.
The rest of the address would be
something like Av12-Ca50-#51,
the balance of an address
portion, in this example being
the address of the Contraloría
General de la República located
in La Sabana on Avenida 12,
Calle 50 and given the number
51. The number is arrived at
measuring the distance of the
entrance from the corner of the
main street, in this case being
51 metres,
Confused even more? Well, don't
worry too much, because Correos
plans to distribute 1.5 million
pamphlets to explain the new
system, according to Geovanni
Campos, head of distribution at
Correos.
Campos added that the
institution will also give first
hand training on the new system
to the 308 customers who use the
post office most.
Correos estimates some 400.000
properties located in San José,
Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago
that will be included in the new
postal address system.
