Guatemala Security a Mess
Recent crimes in Guatemala show
a serious national security
failure that call to replace the
police and government entire
chain of command.
Presidential candidate-to-be
Alvaro Colom urged for a probe
to find the brains and
perpetrators of the murder of
three Salvadorans members of the
Central American Parliament and
a driver, and the assassins
later on.
The general secretary of Unidad
Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE)
Party "says it all seems direct
responsibility of some officials
linked to El Boqueron jail."
Colom added that only someone
with authority could have
reached the policemen involved
in the crime, something he
defined as serious security
flaw.
The brutal murders and following
execution of the alleged
perpetrators could harm the
country"s image and affect
relations with El Salvador.
He also asked the government to
convene a work table with all
three powers of the state
(executive, legislative and
judiciary), political parties
and the Church to stop the
situation.
Guatemala reports 16 crimes per
day and only in the past two
years there has been 10,000
fatalities, so Colom issued a
call to stop the bloodbath.
