Security Guard Who Shot And
Killed Attacker in Self Defense
Set Free
The security guard that shot and
killed a mugger Tuesday morning
turned himself and his gun in to
the Organismo de Investigación
Judicial (OIJ), who determined
that the man acted in self
defense and decided not to
charge him.
The incident occurred in the
early hours of Tuesday morning
when a group of armed
individuals attempted to attack
several people who waiting a bus
at the stop in front of the
Huyndai dealership in La Uruca,
when the unidentified security
guard, who was one of the
intended victims, fought back in
a hail of gunfire.
One of the assailants was struck
by a bullet and was dead on the
scene and one of the female
passengers was taken to hospital
after being hit in the leg by a
stray bullet.
According to the investigation,
the OIJ determined that 21 year
old, Jerry García Anchia, who
had a history of theft, was shot
during the robbery attempt.
As the shootout between the
security guard and the assailant
broke out, everyone scattered
and fled the scene, including
the security guard, who
yesterday decided to give
himself in to the OIJ.
OIJ authorities, reviewing the
evidence and testimony by
witnesses, determined that the
security guard acted in self
defense when the assailants
brandished weapons and let the
security guard free and without
any charges since all he was
doing was defending himself and
ran from the scene fearing
reprisals from the other
assailants who are still at
large.
Last week, a group of visitors
to Costa Rica on a cruise ship
who were taking a day tour of
the port city of Limón
overpowered their attacker who
was killed by one of the
tourists.
The chief of the Fuerza Pública
in Limón said the tourist had
acted in self defense and
following the investigation by
Judicial officials, was released
and allowed back onto the cruise
ship and no charges laid.
The incident prompted the
government to announce new
security measures at the both
the Caribbean and Pacifica
ports, especially at the time
cruise ships are docked.
