Over 300 women murdered in Guatemala in 2007
At least 306 women have been murdered in Guatemala so far this year, said a parliamentary commission of this Central American country Sunday.

Women aged 16 to 40 have been the most affected by the gender violence that prevails in Guatemala, said Nineth Montenegro, President of the Women's Commission of the Congress of Guatemala.

Montenegro said the "increase of homicides causes concerns because it is a permanent violation of the fundamental rights of life, security and integrity."

A large number of murders against women in Guatemala remain unpunished due to the corruption and impunity prevailing in the country, according to a report of the commission.

The report said 18 percent of the murders were carried out by juvenile gang members; 13 percent by people linked to drug trafficking; 8 percent were revenge attacks; 6 percent were related to personal problems and 5 percent were retaliations.

Some 3,000 Guatemalan women have been killed since 2001, said the country's human rights groups. In 2006, 565 woman were reportedly murdered.
