Guatemalan Women Dying
to Reach US
Attempting to reach the
United States for
uncertain salaries and
no medical insurance,
eleven Guatemalan women
were the latest
casualties trying to
cross the Arizona desert
into the land of plenty.
Ana Gladis Ollas, from
the Women s Rights
Center of the Human
Rights Attorney's
Office, told Prensa
Latina that all migrants
face risks, but women
are the most affected.
"Not only must they
abandon their children,
but they become victims
of sexual abuse by
smugglers, police and
others they meet along
the way," she explained.
Many die on the way,
others are victims of
the train of death, and
have their legs and arms
mutilated, Ollas
continued.
And violations to their
rights continue in US
territory, where they
must accept whatever
they are paid for their
work and have no
insurance if they get
sick, Ollas sustained. |
