Poisoned Drug Shakes
Panama
The death of over 100
persons poisoned by a
drug produced in a state
laboratory has shaken
Panama to the point of
provoking violent
protests staged by
victims´ families in
front of the government
headquarters.
Demonstrators charged on
the guard of Las Garzas
Palace on Thursday while
President Martin
Torrijos was
accomplishing a short
visit to Nicaragua.
The note released by the
State Communications
Secretariat lamented the
incident and noted that
the demonstrators
categorically refused to
accept the Executive
representative, the
Presidency's
Vice-Minister Dilio
Arcia who was
commissioned to pay
attention to them.
Immediately after, the
demonstrators tried to
get inside the
presidency grounds
forcing protection units
to set a restricted
fence to prevent their
access, added the note.
The police officers
arrested two
demonstrators who hit
the police that did not
use any fire weapon or
gases to suppress the
aggression.
After President Torrijos
was told of the event,
he immediately ordered
the release of those
detained.
The government regretted
the events and
reiterated it has kept
its word to answer
relatives of the victims
who suffered Acute Renal
Failure (WRATH) from the
poisoning.
The government initially
allocated six million
dollars to the victims
and another 496 thousand
969 dollars coming from
the State Chief's
discretional fund.
WRATH has killed 102 due
to medicine poisoning
with dietilenglicol used
to produce brake fluid
instead of glycerine. |
