Air Comet Begins Service With Inaugural Flight From Madrid to San José
The Spanish airline, Air Comet, yesterday landed its first flight at the Juan Santamaría (San José) international airport, beginning a new service that will carry some 46.000 passengers yearly from the "old" continent as Spain is considered by Costa Ricans.

Air Comet will offer three flights weekly, offering prices as low as us$437 for a return flight between Madrid and San José.

Ricardo Benavides, Costa Rican Tourism minister, said that the inauguration of the Air Comet flights allows more Europeans access to Costa Rica, not only by offering lower prices but also pushing down prices of the competition, positioning Costa Rica as a more attractive destination from Europe.

The Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT) estimates that Air Comet will carry some 23.000 passengers to Costa Rica in the next six months, hence the 46.000 annual figure.

Air Comer is using Airbus A-330 aircrafts for the route which has a capacity of 298 passengers.

The direct flight from Madrid allows connections to Rome, Londong and Paris, for example, opening cheaper flights to San José from more European cities.

Costa Rica expects to close 2007 with 650.000 more passengers over 2006, which would mean a total of 2.2 million tourists.

In the past week all the U.S. airlines have added more flights to Costa Rica. For example, Continental with three flights daily, offered five during the past weekend. Delta has added one more daily flight into San José, as well as newcomer Spirit Airlines with a dailyred eye from Fort Lauderdale. For now, American Airlines is keeping its daily flights to four, however, US Air added one extra flight this past week, meeting the demands of more U.S. vacationers who are choosing Costa Rica this year.
