Panamanians Demand Compensation
for Health Crisis
Relatives of victims of
medicines poisoned with a
chemical substance are demanding
the Panamanian government on
Sunday to include them in an
official list for receiving
compensation.
Though the Panamanian government
only recognized 92 poisoned
persons for taking medicines
mixed with the chemical
substance, of which only 52
died, judicial authorities are
investigating 362 cases.
Prosecutor Dimas Guevara noted
that 302 cases of that figure
are dead, according to
denunciations of their
relatives.
Minister of Health Camilo
Alleyne, Social Security Fund (CSS)
Director Rene Luciani, and
members of the directive board
of that entity, are among those
subjected to investigation.
The health crisis started on
October 2, when authorities
decreed an epidemiologic alarm
due to the deaths, whose causes
were unknown at that time.
After several investigations
carried out by experts and
international institutions, such
as the Pan-American Health
Organization, the
dietileneglicol poisoning
substance was found in four
medicines produced by CSS labs.
