Tránsito Official Shot While Attempting to Stop "Piques"
Despite warnings, stiffer fines, the threat of confiscation of their vehicles by Tránsito (traffic) authorities and the dangers, street racing (piques in Spanish) continues.

Tránsito officials know the dangers that street racing poses for the public, and last night one Tránsito official found how dangerous it is for them as well.

Last night, along the Autopista Braulio Carrillo (San José to Limón route) near the Cruce de San Luís de Santo Domingo de Hereida, was the scene of an attack on a Tránsito official identified as Marvin Quesada, was shot at two times by street races who did not take kindly to his interference.

According to police reports, the Tránsito officials was attempting to control the street racing that is common in the area, when a man approached him and ask the official for his gun and shot him twi in the leg..

Quesada had been threatened before by the street racers who use the straightway of the highway as their own playground.
However, this is not the first incidence of violence against a Tránsito official by the street races. Last Thursday, a Tránsito was attacked by street races in Zapote. The official in that incident was beaten and his vehicle damaged.

Tránsito officials are asking for higher ups to allow them more protection by not patrolling the streets alone, especially areas known for street racing and back up by the Fuerza Pública (police) in completing with their duties.
