Cheated Guatemalans Want Money
Back
Dozens of fraud victims of
officials at the now-closed
Trade Bank of Guatemala continue
demanding their money at
protests in front of the
Guatemalan Congress.
With whistles and drums,
demonstrators demanded deeper
questioning of Monetary Board
president Maria Antonieta de
Bonilla and Bank Superintendent
Willy Zapata.
Farmers, retirees, professionals
and housewives protested the
lack of results in questioning
of the two officials, which will
continue next Tuesday, as some
deputies requested.
It is not clear yet if there is
a possibility for small
investors cheated by the
institution to get their money
back.
Deposits were made at the Trade
Bank of Guatemala but unknown to
clients they were transferred to
an enterprise in Panama, and
records were not registered.
No investment certificates were
delivered, and instead they
handed the clients debt
certificates, which makes
judicial investigation more
difficult.
"We aren't demanding anything
other than the refund of years
of effort," some of the affected
people told Prensa Latina.
