Cuba to sign cooperation pacts
with Venezuela
Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage
arrived in Venezuela on
Wednesday to sign a series of
agreements aimed at boosting
cooperation in areas ranging
from tourism to
telecommunications.
The agreements will be signed
within the framework of the
Bolivarian Alternative for the
Americas (ALBA) and cover rice
production, telecommunications,
efforts to improve the railway
network in Cuba, said Venezuelan
Basic Industries Minister Jose
Khan.
Lage was received with honors by
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
at the presidential residence
Palacio de Miraflores.
Lage has been the delegate for
Cuba-Venezuela links since
Cubanleader Fidel Castro
transferred power to Defense
Minister Raul Castro on July 31,
four days after undergoing
intestinal surgery.
ALBA, which groups together
Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia and
Nicaragua, is a political,
social and economic cooperation
alliance proposed by Chavez as
an alternative to the
U.S.-backed Free Trade
Agreements for the Americas.
