Each Day 20 Hondurans to US Sans
Papers
Some 20 Hondurans a day try to
illegally reach the United
States, where 1.2 million
compatriots live, mostly without
documents, Puerto Cortes
migration officer Cristobal
Romero asserted on Monday.
The data was provided by the
authority in a press conference,
in which he also confirmed
repatriation of seven Hondurans,
who traveled for three days
hidden in a small boat headed
for the United States..
According to the officer s
declarations, the crew of the US
Z Big I boat handed the
stowaways over to the police of
Puerto Cortes, 186 miles north
of Tegucigalpa.
Romero explained that by the end
of 2006, 25,000 undocumented
emigrants were returned to their
place of origin.
An average of nine people tries
to immigrate illegally to the
United States every hour, but
only one percent reaches that
destination, he asserted.
Government data revealed that
45,000 Hondurans left for the
United States between 2001 and
2002, but the number has
doubled, since 2003.
