Spain Agreed To Forgive Costa Rican us$58 Million Debt
The Secretaria de Estado de España (Spains Secretary of State), Trinidad Jiménez, arrived in Costa Rica yesterday to meet with president Oscar Arias, Costa Rican foreign minister, Bruno Stagno and the president of the Legislative Assembly, Antonio Pacheco.

On the head of the list of discussions is the decision by the government of Spain to forgive the massive debt Costa Rica has accumulated with the European nation.

Spain said it would cancel Costa Rica's debt of us$58 million dollars under a mechanism that would permit the country to channel funds to better education, especially in rural communities and the indigenous.

The request for the debt cancellation was made by president Arias to his counterpart in Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, last November, during the Cumbre Iberoamericana, that was held in Uruguay.

Jiménez, was greeted yesterday on her arrival and today will be at Casa Amarilla (the Costa Rican foreign ministry) in meetings with Stagno and later will be at Casa Presidencial to meet with president Arias. Jiménez is expected to leave Costa Rica later this afternoon.
