New Anti-FTA Protests in
Colombia
Senator Jorge Robledo announced
on Sunday new demonstrations
against the congressional
approval of the Free Trade
Agreement (FTA) between the
governments of Colombia and the
US.
Robledo noted that his party,
the Polo Democrático Alternativo,
along with grassroots
organizations is organizing
protests against the FTA, which,
according to him, will destroy
thousands of jobs in the
countryside as well as small and
medium companies.
For the senator, the trade deal
the Colombian Legislative should
discusse from February may be
returned to the government due
to the adjustments that US
congress people want to do.
After their win at the US
Congress by the end of 2006,
democrat legislators said they
would not pass the FTA without
modifications in the
environmental and labor issues.
Although the Colombian
government assured it would not
renegotiate the pact with
Washington, they admitted the
possibility of discussing the
inclusion of such modifications.
