Romania And Bulgaria Added To
List For Costa Rican Pineapple
Exports
Romania and Bulgaria are the
most recent countries added to
the list of European Union
nations and to the list of
countries to import Costa Rican
grown pineapples.
According to Abel Chávez,
president of the Cámara de
Productores y Exportadores de
Pińa (Canapep), Romanians and
Bulgarians will be able to enjoy
Costa Rican pineapples this
year, as commercial relations
betweent he countries were
solidified at the beginning of
this month.
Chávez said he recognizes that
the countries have weaker
economies than the rest of
Europe, but they are economies
in growth.
The United States is still the
prime market for Costa Rican
pineapples, followed y Belgium,
Germany and Holland.
Costa Rican producers are
expecting a boom year for their
pineapples with sales forecast
to surpass the us$450 million
dollars. Canapep is predicting
growth to pass 15%, looking to
an increase in demand from the
U.S.
Canapep says it exported us$413
million dollars worth of
pineapples in 2006, which places
pineapple as second to bananas
for exportation.
More than half the pineapple
production is in the Northern
Zone, with the rest being
produced in the Atlantic and
Southern zones.
The production levels in real
numbers means that Costa Rican
will pack and ship some 105
million cases of pineapples in
2007.
Chávez added that there is no
foreseen drastic drop in
international prices and thus
the pace of growth will
continue.
