No Justice for El Salvador
Victims
Hundreds of victims of human
rights violations during the El
Salvador civil war are still
without compensation from the
government, said the
International Center for Justice
and Rights (CEJIL).
Between 1980 and 1991, El
Salvador was in a war that left
more than 75,000 dead people,
8,000 disappeared and 40,000
injured or disabled people.
It was not until January 16,
1992 that the reconciliation was
signed, but according to CEJIL,
after 15 years of the signing of
the agreement, there has been no
investigation into who was
responsible for the massacres by
the Salvadoran Army.
CEJIL lawyer Gisela de Leon said
that no military official or
soldier has been legally
processed by any court, and that
the Amnesty Law promoting
impunity was approved five days
after the presentation of the
report by the Commission of
Truth.
This report by the Commission
showed the violations during the
armed conflict, the responsible
people and the recommendations
in relation to justice.
Even after an arrest order was
dictated to Salvadoran military
officials, the Amnesty Law
eliminated the possibility of an
effective investigation, and
that is why the murders of
Monsignor Oscar Arnulfo Romero
and other priests are still
unpunished.
