Panama Ups Retiree Pensions
Starting Wednesday, 122,000 Panamanian retirees began to receive an increase in their pensions, part of an agreement with the government that ended their protests.

In November 2006 the Parliament approved a bill by which retired people with pensions under $500 will gradually receive a 30-dollar increase.

According to Eladio Fernandez, representative of that sector, the project meets their demands as the figure they had been receiving is insufficient for basic needs.

During several weeks at the end of 2006 Panamanian elderly took to the Panama City streets to demand a hike.
