Uruguayan Tourism Off to Poor
Start
Both private and government
information Monday indicated
that Uruguay s tourism began
2007 on the wrong foot, in part
due to roads blocked by
Argentine activists.
The first eight days of January,
beginning of high season in this
southeast South American nation,
saw a 16 percent decrease,
admitted Migrations Sub director
Tabare Gordiola.
Argentine environmentalist have
been protesting construction of
a cellulose paste factory on a
border river for almost two
years and the most frequent land
route to enter Uruguay, the Gen.
San Martin Bridge, has been
blockaded.
In 2006 the tourism in the
country brought 544.3 million
dollars, up four and a half
million from 2005.
UN agencies predict a general
slowdown in the Latin American
and Caribbean economic increase
to 4.2 percent this year,
compared to the five percent in
2006, due to the deceleration of
the world economy and low prices
of their exports.
