Peru, Ecuador to extend border
plan for 10 more years
Peru and Ecuador will extend for
10 years the development plan
derived from a peace agreement
in 1998 that ended their border
disputes, Peruvian Foreign
Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde
said on Tuesday.
Garcia Belaunde said that the
plan, which would expire in
2009,will be extended to 2019,
with a shared investment of 3
million U.S. dollars, part of
which will come from foreign
help.
The Binational Border Plan for
Border Region Development aimed
to raise the living standards of
the people in border areas and
to encourage broader integration
and cooperation between the two
countries.
Bilateral projects include
building road infrastructure and
water distribution systems in
the most impoverished areas on
both sides of the border.
"With the extension of the plan,
it will be possible to complete
the projects already begun and
to include some others in order
not to leave any of them
unfinished," Garcia Belaunde
said.
On Monday, Peruvian President
Alan Garcia attended the
inauguration of Ecuador's new
president Rafael Correa.
