TLC In Trouble Minister Arias
Admits
With two major parties opposed
to the Tratado Libre de Comercio
(TLC) - free trade agreement
with the United States,
Government Minister Rodrigo
Arias, admitted Tuesday that it
is difficult to approve the
deal in the Legislature.
The increasing rejection in the
Legislature and with the
majority of Costa Ricans against
it, is the reason for the
ministers comment as the trade
deal makes its way to the
Legislature floor.
Costa Rica is the only signatory
country that has not yet
approved the free trade
agreement .
Minister Arias said there was no
clarity reached following a
meeting with the 25 legislators
from PLN (Partido Liberación
Nacional), the ruling party.
PLN party leader Mayi Antillon
said the party will stay firm in
rejecting the project, that
three draft bills aimed at
expediting its approval did not
reach consensus and the
Legislature has more pressing,
national matters to attend to
than dealing with this
legislation for the United
States.
