Construction of New Pedestrian Boulevard Begins Today
Downtown San José will have a new face with the beginning today of construction of a "bulevar" (boulevard) along Avenida 4, on the south side.

The pedestrian boulevard will be 1.200 metres (1.2 kilometres) that will run from the Iglesia de La Soledad on the east to the parque La Merced, in front of the hospital San Juan de Dios on the west.

The cost of the construction is us$1.8 million dollars (˘934 million colones) and is being financed by the Municipalidad de San José and a donation by the European Union.

Construction is expected to be completed in two months and vehicular traffic along Aveniva 4 will totally closed, similar to the boulevard that runs along Avenida Central from the Mercado Central to Calle 7.

San José mayor, Johnny Araya, said yesterday that the new boulevard will attract more visitors to the downtown core, as well as more residents and shops along the avenida. "For this is very satisfying that we can begin this work in the age of the rejuvination of the urban centre", said Araya.

With the construction, a number of bus stops along Avenida 4 are being moved Stops for Alajuela, Heredia, Desamparados, Alajuelita and Hatillo will be relocated in the coming months as construction advances.
