Costa Rica, Taiwan Eye Free
Trade Talks
Costa Rica and Taiwan are
considering negotiating a free
trade pact, the announcement of
Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian
has proposal of a Free Trade
Agreement (FTA).
The president raised the idea
with Costa Rican President Oscar
Arias on Wednesday. Both men
were attending the inauguration
of Nicaraguan President Daniel
Ortega in the Nicaraguan capital
Managua.
President Arias was positive
about the prospects for an FTA
with Taiwan. Taiwan currently
has FTAs with four Central
American countries, including
Nicaragua. President Chen is
also pressing for Costa Rica to
join the Asia-Pacific Economic
Co-operation (APEC).
Apart from seeking better trade
relations with Costa Rica,
Taiwan is set to provide aid
worth over US$70 million to
Burkina Faso. Taiwan's
ambassador to the western
African nation, Yao Wen-lung,
announced the signing of an
agreement on Thursday. The aid
will include technical and
financial assistance over the
next eight years to boost
Burkina Faso's agriculture and
industries.
Chen also urged Costa Rica to
joint the Asia-Pacific Economic
Cooperation forum.
