Public Sector Rejects Salary Decree
The United Federation of Workers and Teachers (CUSIMA) expressed total opposition to the "salary decree" for the public sector.

The government unilaterally set a fixed four percent raise in public salaries for the first half of 2007.

The CUSIMA representative demanded the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, Francisco Morales, to withdraw this decision. According to member Tyronne Esna Montero, if proper measures were not taken, they would call protests for next week.

The group affirmed that by this decree the government is denying the right of workers to collectively negotiate salaries.

Last week the National Association of Public and Private Employees (ANEP) requested government authorities to withdraw the decision, although Rodrigo Arias Sanchez, presidential minister, assure the decree would be maintained.
