El Salvador: Authorities
Expected Prison Massacre
El Salvador s Attorney General s
Office asserted Wednesday that
this weekend s massacre in the
Apanteos Prison was anticipated
by officers and prisoners.
Officials and prisoners in that
penitentiary in Santa Ana, 43
miles from the capital, warned
of the danger by the entry of
gangs, Carlos Godoy, Public
Ministry Life Unit chief,
declared.
We do not have an official
report of those warnings, but
during the count of corpses an
officer made the comment and we
are investigating, Godoy told
local media
Apanteos Warden Oswaldo Portillo
confirmed the statements by the
Attorney General s Office that
there was concern due to the
coexistence of gangs and common
prisoners, but no measures were
taken at all, Portillo admitted.
Similarly, the Salvadoran
Department for Human Rights
ratified the prior warnings, La
Prensa Grafica daily headlined.
A letter released by that
source, written by Nelson Majano
Garcia, killed during the
disturbances, also warned of the
danger.
