Nicaragua: Ortega Back in Power
Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega
is due to return the presidency
Wednesday amid large
expectations and strong security
measures, with the presence of
15 heads of States at his
swearing-in ceremony.
His return to power with the
Sandinista National Liberation
Front, which 27 years ago
defeated a bloody and dynastic
dictatorship, is today a
historic event.
Things are not the same as when
Ortega led the Central American
country between 1979 and 1990,
first as coordinator of the
Sandinista government and then
as elected president.
At that time, Ortega had to face
a dirty war financed by the US,
which in addition to destroying
the country"s economy and
causing tens of thousands
deaths, created enormous
divisions among Nicaraguans.
Seventeen years later, from the
economic point of view,
Nicaragua is not much better
than when the Sandinista leader
relinquished power to Violeta de
Chamorro in 1990.
