Colombia Frees Telesur
Journalist
Fredy Muñoz, the correspondent
for multi-national Telesur who
was arrested in November by
Colombian secret police, was
freed on Tuesday after a
prosecutor delegated to the
Bolivar Department Superior
Court revoked his detention.
The prosecutor held there was no
evidence to keep him under
arrest and ordered Muñoz release
from El Bosque Prison in
Barranquilla, capital of
northern Atlantico Department.
In declarations to Prensa
Latina, the reporter s defense
attorney Tito Augusto Gaitan
said the evidence presented by
the prosecutor s office did not
have sufficient force to warrant
a detention measure.
Gaitan said the testimonies
presented by alleged witnesses
were proven to be not important
or credible, something the
defense had maintained from the
beginning.
Muñoz, a Colombian citizen with
12 years experience as a
journalist and editor, was
detained on charges of
"rebellion" when he returned to
Colombia after participating in
a Telesur workshop in Venezuela
that had been organized by a BBC
correspondent.
