Salvadorans Protest Mining
Permissions
Thousands of inhabitants of
different communities from El
Salvador s departments of
Chalatenango and Morazan
protested Tuesday in front of
the Environmental Ministry over
concessions to mining companies
for exploration.
Mayor Jose Otilio Serrano of San
Antonio Los Ranchos,
Chalatenango, said that since
the beginning of the year local
announcements have been placed
without consulting his office on
the process of exploration in
Pentacol, by the TRIADA, SA
corporation.
Serrano said the community was
worried because the permissions
for exploration would affect the
health of the inhabitants of the
area and the environment,
including contamination of the
water.
"We think the effects would be
disastrous," he said after he
pointed out they will protest
for permissions not to be
granted.
Balmore Torres, from the
Chalatenango Ecological
Association, said that a study
on environmenal impact was
presented on December 18 for
another exploration project in
Morazan.
Torres said the project would
not contribute to improving
their lives, but would bring
more deterioration.
