Ortega to Lead Nicaragua from
Base
Daniel Ortega will receive today
the presidential sash in the
same place where 17 years ago,
after losing elections, he
announced the Sandinista
National Liberation Front (FSLN)
was going to govern from the
base.
"We are going to fight and
govern from the base," said the
Sandinista leader on February
26, 1990 at the Omar Torrijos
Non-Aligned Square, amid the
general affliction provoked by
the setback for the Sandinista
Revolution.
Several people interpreted those
words as a simple attempt to
console the grass-roots, but
with the passing of time, Ortega
s words became a premonition.
Despite two consecutive
electoral defeats and many
desertions, the FSLN has
achieved the support of
grass-roots sectors,
strengthened its organization
and extended powerful amounts of
money into several State
institutions.
The loyalty of those
Nicaraguans, together with
divisions in the right, allowed
Ortega to finally recover
Nicaragua s presidency during
the November 5 elections.
On January 10, almost 17 years
later, the Sandinista leader
will come back to the Omar
Torrijos Non-Aligned Square,
amid his followers joyful
enthusiasm, to put on the
presidential sash, to govern
"from the base."
