El Salvador Prisons Still on Red
Alert
Four Salvadorian prisons are
still on red alert after the
weekend riot in Apanteos prison
and death of 21 prisoners.
In line with the emergency
decreed, the personnel assigned
to those penitentiaries are
still confined to barracks,
faced with imminent new riots in
the prisons.
In that context, the critical
situation of the Salvadorian
prison system was questioned
again by Human Rights Attorney
Beatrice de Carrillo, San
Salvador Auxiliary Archbishop
Gregorio Sosa, and others.
Opposition deputies said the
massacre during the weekend has
common points with that in
August, 2004 in La Esperanza
penitentiary, known as Mariona,
and that both were a symptom of
this system s failure.
