Panama Begins Stint on Security
Council
At the start of its two-year
membership on the UN Security
Council Monday, Panama denounced
the threat to peace and
international security and
stated the greatest threats come
from poverty, hunger, injustice
and marginalization.
On the theme "Threats to
International Peace and
Security," Panamanian Ambassador
Alberto Arias said the greatest
threats no longer come from wars
between countries, but from
destabilization caused by
poverty, hunger, injustice and
marginalization.
"They [such threats] are coming
from the propagation of
diseases, lack and abuse of
natural resources, devastation
of the environment, religious,
cultural or ethnic conflicts,
and human rights violations," he
said.
International organized crime
and use of weapons of mass
destruction were other aspects
mentioned by the Panamanian
ambassador, who pointed out not
all such risks must necessarily
be examined by the Security
Council, as there are subsidiary
organizations, including the
Secretary General s Office and
the universal representation of
the General Assembly.
