Argentina Car Biz, Pedal to
Floor
Automobile production in
Argentina experienced a 35.1
percent increase in 2006, when
432,101 units were built, the
Automobile Factory Association (ADEFA)
reported in this capital.
Car production in 2006 was close
to that of 1998, the last year
with an increase before a
recession that lasted until
2002, a period that ended with a
historic 457,957 automobile
production record.
Exports during the cycle
recently concluded reached
236,789 units, 30.4 percent more
than in 2005, and the main
destinations were Brazil,
Mexico, and Chile, in that
order, the ADEFA said.
Together with construction, the
automobile industry is one of
the driving forces behind the
Argentinian economy, which is
undergoing its fourth year of
growth, reaching annual rates of
nine percent.
Executives of companies of the
sector have predicted a
production close to 500,000 cars
in 2007, an old dream for that
sector.
