Big Cocaine Load Confiscated in
Nicaragua
Joint forces of Nicaragua´s army
and police dealt a new blow to
international drug trafficking,
with the capture of a drug load
that was unofficially calculated
in 1.5 ton of cocaine.
According to Colonel Salvador
Gutierrez, until now they have
captured 1,281 packages of
cocaine, in four of six vehicles
detained during a raid conducted
in the Rivas department, 80
miles south of Managua.
The biggest haul was hidden in a
double bottom at the rear of a
truck, reported authorities, who
explained they were now weighing
the load.
The drug is supposed to have
come by boat from South America.
Until now, 14 persons have been
detained, all of Nicaraguan
nationality, added official
sources.
This is the first important coup
on international drug traffic
this year.
In 2006, according to the
authorities, about 13 tons of
cocaine was captured in
Nicaragua, considered a drug
corridor from South America to
the United States, home to the
biggest illegal drug market
worldwide.
