Unranked Men Reach Semi's of
Tennis Coffee Cup
Under-18 professionals Italy's
Antonio Comporto and El
Salvador's Marcelo Arevalo
Friday surprised tennis pundits
by reaching the semi-finals of
Costa Rica's Coffee Cup by
beating two top seeds.
Unseeded players Comporto and
Arevalo each eliminated a list
of top players on their way to
the semi-final and tennis
observers are keen to see what
they can do next.
The Italian beat American
heavyweight Drew Daniel 6-7 (4),
7-5 and 6-1 to face Brazil's
Fernando Romboli, the number one
seed. Romboli has already
defeated much higher rated
players: number four seed
Gonzalo Escobar and number 14
Nikita Zotov.
Romboli had no difficulty in
defeating Slovakia's Eugen
Brazdil 6-2 and 6-0, extending
his run as the contest's most
consistent player.
Meanwhile, Arevalo Thursday
defeated Denmark's Ulkrik
Thomsen 6-3 and 6-0, and goes on
to face 16th seed Holland's
Thomas Schoorel on Friday.
Schoorel barely raised a sweat
to defeat Ecuador's Patricio
Alvarado, number 11 seed.
Arevalo's path to the semis
includes the win over third seed
Romania's Dragos Mirteas. If he
proves victorious he will be
only the second Central American
to hold the trophy, after fellow
Salvadorian Miguel Merz.
There were no surprises in the
women's competition, with number
one seed, the United States's
Julia Cohen, swiftly defeating
Romania's Irina Begu. She will
go one to face Russia's Elena
Chernyakova, the number four
seed.
The number two seed, Russia's
Anastasia Pivovarona, will face
the number 14 seed, Israel's
Julia Glushko.
In its 43rd edition in 2007, the
Cup has attracted 225 players
from 44 countries and regions,
and is one of the world's most
important tournaments for tennis
players under-18.
