Health Minister Has Her Medical
License Suspended
The name of Health minister,
doctora María Luisa Ávila Agüero,
appears on a list by the Junta
Directiva del Colegio de Médicos
y Cirujanos de Costa Rica
(college of doctors and
surgeons), of doctors with their
medical license suspended for
not being to up tp date with
their professional dues.
The list of doctors suspended
for non payment of dues was
published in the officials
government publication La Gaceta
and doctors on the list cannot
practice medicine until they pay
up.
Dr. Avila, according to the
publication, has paid her ¢6.000
colones (us$11.65) monthly dues
for the last four months and
effectively owes the medical
board ¢24.000 colones
(us$46.60). Once the payment is
made, Dr. Avila can then again
practice medicine, according to
the medical board rules and
regulations.
Dr. Avila was surprised to learn
of the news yesterday, believing
that the Ministerio de Salud
(Health Ministry) would
automatically pay her dues to
the Colegio de Médicos.
Talking to the Spanish daily,
Diaro Extra's Gerardo Sáenz
Valverde, who informed the
minister of the publication of
her name on the list of later
payers, Dr. Avila said "I want
to thank you for the
information, I believed, that
the CCaja Costarricense de
Seguro Social, automatically
deducted my medical board fees,
and although I am suspended from
practicing medicine, it does not
affect my duties and function as
health minister."
The doctor added that to avoid
being criticized over this
incident she will promptly pay
her dues first thing Monday
morning when the medical board
offices open.
