Education Minister Assures
Classes Will Start on Schedule,
Following Theft of Computers
Some will do anything to avoid
going back to school, including
stealing computers from the
offices of the Ministerio de
Educación Pública (MEP) -
education ministry - the same
computers that was being used
this week to maintain
information for the school year
set to begin on February 7.
Education minister, Leonardo
Garnier, announced yesterday
that thieves broke into the
offices of the MEP's Servicio
Civil early Thursday morning and
made away with the computer
containing information about the
selection of teachers that will
be working for the MEP.
Police reports say that a group
or armed men entered the offices
and threatened the security
guard, walking directly to the
computer that had been used up
to until the later hours of
Wednesday evening containing
information on the 7.000
teachers that will be holding
classes in February. The thieves
made off with 3 computers.
Minister Garnier said that the
theft is very unusual and
assures that the teachers list
will be prepared in time and
classes will start on schedule
as planned. No mention was made
is the information contained in
the computer had been backed up
on other media, however, the
minister did say that MEP
employees have already started
to reconstruct the information
on other computers.
Other information contained in
the stolen computers are teacher
salaries.
